Sick Pig

One of my guinea pig has been sick for about a week. I first noticed Junior was sick when he didn't eat or drink at all, oh and not pooping too. He only ate a little bit of the cucumber i fed him. (Cucumber is like an ice-cream treat to guinea pigs). He was still as active as ever, but learned later that guinea pigs are very good at hiding their sickness.

A guinea pig who is not eating or drinking is very worrying, and if it doesn't eat after a few hours, it might die. So the boyfriend brought Junior to the vet. Turns out his gastrointestinal tract was blocked. The vet gave Junior a shot and some antibiotics to take. Was advised to give him lots of hay! Didn't buy any recently....oops!

Antibiotics

We had to feed him his antibiotics twice a day. He would squirm, turn his head away and try to run away whenever we fed him! Had to hold him like a baby and use the syringe to feed him.

Glad to say that he's much better now, albeit not eating his pellets and drinking water as much as he used to. Hope he gets well soon.

Dirty little pig

Just the other day, we decided to give one of our guinea pigs a bath, as he got himself quite dirty that day. As usual, when it's bath time, the camera comes out! It's so funny when the pig is looking wet and skinny. We gave him a quick warm bath and then bundled him in a towel to dry. Here are the pics i took:

A very Abby family!

First off, sorry for not updating for so long. Have been quite busy with work that i've missed out on a few posts. But first things first! Remember my Abyssinian guinea pigs? Here's a picture to remind you guys.

Well, we have had them for 5 months now. When we bought them from the shop we were told they were about 2 months old, which makes them 7 months now. And the shop didn't know their gender then. So we put them in the same cage. After 5 months with no babies, we thought that it was safe. My, were we in for a surprise!

Imagine, every morning you look into the cage and greet the 2 guinea pigs. Imagine one day you look into the cage and find a little bugger staring at you!

Imagine the surprise we got! But they were soooooo cute and their coats so smooth. One good thing about baby guinea pigs is that they are born with fur and are miniatures of their parents. They can be handled immediately without fear of their parents rejecting them later.

So now we have 4 pigs in a cage.

I'm sure that's what Rufus would say. But recently we found out that 'he' is a female (don't ask how), so we've been calling her Ruffina. That's the Lego Batman game by the way, i've been addicted to it recently. (No wonder i've been tempting to kick/hit/bomb black dustbin cans that i come across). Rufus/Ruffina has been an absolute saint nowadays. Sits quietly on my lap while i play my game or watch tv but once she gets fidgety, it means she wants to pee or poo.

I'm on leave starting tomorrow and going back to work on the 2nd of Jan 2009! So...
